FIFA World Cup 2022: disciplinary sanctions against Uruguay and four of its players – rts.ch

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to sanction the Uruguayan Football Federation and four of its players for incidents that occurred during the group match of the 2022 World Cup between Uruguay and Ghana. As a reminder, after the final whistle, some Uruguayan players were threatening to the referee.

Players José María Giménez, Edinson Cavani, Fernando Muslera and Diego Godín were under investigation for “misconduct”, “offensive behavior and violations of the principles of fair play” for being particularly virulent towards the referee after the final whistle.

Giménez and Muslera each received a 4-match suspension, a 20,000 franc fine and “community service in the service of the football community”, while Cavani and Godin were sentenced to 1-match suspension, 15,000 francs fine and community service.

The players had surrounded and insulted the referee after the end of the match, with a seemingly threatening attitude. Cavani had violently hit the screen intended for the main referee when the latter was challenged by the video assistance (VAR).
