AL RAYYAN, Qatar — The United States frustrated England until they drew 0-0 on Friday in the nations’ second match at the World Cup of soccer.

The result may not match the famous 1-0 victory for the United States in the 1950 tournament, but it is still the most recent occasion in which the Americans have defied the odds against the English.

England are still awaiting their first victory in three World Cup games against the United States since a 1-1 draw in South Africa in 2010.

England crushed Iran 6-2 in their opener in Qatar, which vindicated their status as one of the tournament favorites. The English, however, could have left this clash against the United States with a defeat.

The Americans came close to securing a second victory against England at the World Cup, after creating several scoring chances, including a strike on the crossbar by Christian Pulisic.

Weston McKennie also just missed the target at close range.

“I would like to see some goals,” USA head coach Gregg Berhalter said. We are proud, but the job is not finished. »

Harry Kane missed a header for England in stoppage time.

“It wasn’t our best performance, definitely,” Kane said. We had some good times with the ball, but we didn’t quite get our finished product. The shutout put us in a good position in the group. »

England knew a win would guarantee them a place in the knockout stage, but the draw still leaves them atop Group B with four points. The United States are third with two points and will need to defeat Iran on Tuesday to advance to the next round.
