On June 24, the International Skating Union (ISU) published a post on social networks on the occasion of the International Olympic Day without mentioning the winner of the women’s competition, Russian Anna Shcherbakova. In the photo gallery, she was replaced by Japanese Kaori Sakamoto, who won bronze. Shcherbakova reacted to the incident with the phrase “I sincerely believe that everyone is equal in sports.”

On March 1, the ISU banned Russians from participating in competitions under its auspices. Due to sanctions, athletes in 2022 might not take part in the adult world championship, as well as in the junior world championship. On June 7, the ISU extended the suspension of the Russians until further notice.
