Filip Zadina’s Career Path: From the Red Wings to the San Jose Sharks – Can He Revive His Hockey Journey?

The career of striker Filip Zadina does not take the expected tangent. After his first five seasons in Detroit with the Red Wings, the Czech signed a one-year deal with the San Jose Sharks. And the forward player did not hesitate to come back to his time with the Wings.

Zadina was a first-round pick, sixth overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft. And according to the odds, he was even expected to be selected higher. Some even saw him land with the Montreal Canadiens, in third place. The latter, however, opted for Jesperi Kotkaniemi. Then the Ottawa Senators took Brady Tkachuk. And the Arizona Coyotes, Barrett Hayton. The Wings finally said his name, in the sixth rung.

After five disappointing seasons in Detroit where he only scored 28 goals, Zadina got a fresh start, with a one-year contract and $1.1 million in his pocket.

If, after the 2018 draft, Zadina had made the promise to “fill the nets with pucks” of the teams which snubbed him, he does it again by throwing an arrow at the Wings.

“It’s hard for a young rookie to come to a rebuilding team like Detroit,” he told hockeysverige.se. The Red Wings didn’t have as strong a core as some other teams.”

“I was happy and lucky to get a chance so quickly in the NHL that I probably wouldn’t have gotten on other teams. I did my best. But if you’re not Connor [McDavid] ou Auston [Matthews]it’s hard to make a difference.”

Zadina completed his stint with the Wings with 68 points in 190 games.

Can he revive his career with the Sharks?

“I’m only 23 and I think the best case scenario for me is to play hockey for less money and get the chance to play regularly instead of being thrown in and out of roster,” continued the attacker. Sometimes you have to sacrifice something to try to get more.”
