The final witness interviews are expected to take place this week in the criminal trial against ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) for making false statements in the Ibiza investigative committee. ÖBAG Supervisory Board Chairman Helmut Kern, Bernd Brünner, former Secretary General in the Federal Chancellery, and ÖBAG Supervisory Board member Susanne Höllinger are coming on Tuesday. There will certainly not be a verdict this week, the last day of the hearing is probably February 23rd.

Kurz – like his former head of cabinet Bernhard Bonelli – is accused by the economic and corruption public prosecutor’s office (WKStA) of downplaying his role in filling positions, for example for the supervisory board and board of directors of the state holding company ÖBAG. The ex-Chancellor’s statements primarily contradict those of the state holding company’s former board member, Thomas Schmid, who had already been invited as a witness.

On Wednesday, the first witness will be Günther Helm, former boss of the discounter Hofer and later on the ÖBAG supervisory board. In the afternoon, the two Russian businessmen who allegedly had a job interview with Schmid will be interviewed via Zoom call from the Austrian embassy in Moscow. The pleas from the WKStA and the defense should then follow on February 23rd if no further witnesses are requested and admitted. A judgment is then also possible.
