The financing of the Association for Consumer Protection Information (VKI) is secured for the next few years. The Ministry of Social Affairs is funding the VKI at least until 2025 with 4.8 million euros annually, according to a broadcast on Monday. With the money, the VKI sends warnings, conducts test cases and class actions once morest companies and thus enforces the rights of consumers.
“Although consumers have many rights, companies unfortunately far too often do not comply with the applicable rules,” said Social Affairs Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) according to the broadcast. In many cases, the risk of legal costs is a hurdle. Rauch referred to the VKI as a “reliable partner” for advice and, if necessary, legal action to assert rights once morest companies. The VKI is financed through basic funding of 3.7 million euros plus a work contract worth 1.1 million euros.
In 2022, the VKI conducted 231 procedures on behalf of the ministry, with a success rate of 97 percent. The focus was primarily on travel, financial services and energy supply. The ministry has commissioned the VKI since 1992, and the association has so far recorded around 1,570 test cases, 2,300 association cases and 28 class action lawsuits. In the last five years alone, 40 million euros have been won for around 470,000 victims by means of class action lawsuits.
