The updated flu vaccine for 2024 is now available in the private health network. The objective is to reach people who are not included in the national vaccination campaign by the Ministry of Health (MS).
In its initial phase, the Unified Health System (SUS) vaccine will only be applied to priority groups, such as the elderly, pregnant women, women who have recently given birth, health workers, education and security forces and children aged 6 months to 6 years. Other people who wish to be immunized should opt for private clinics and pharmacies.
The private network’s immunizer is a little more comprehensive than what will be distributed by the Ministry of Health. It encompasses an additional strain, protecting the individual against four subtypes of the Influenza virus, H3N2 and H1N1, and two types of Influenza B of the lineage Yamagata. The public vaccine is trivalent, protecting against two strains of the Influenza A virus and one of B.

The dose applied in the private network is recommended for anyone over six months of age and there is no age limit. Prices vary between R$89.90 and R$74.95.
The director of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations (SBIm) Isabella Ballalai states that there is no contraindication for the Influenza vaccine, except if the individual experienced an anaphylactic shock to any component after a previous dose of the vaccine.
The director emphasizes that the side symptoms of immunization are not usually pronounced. “Both trivalent and quadrivalent can cause slight pain in the arm and redness at the site of application. Nothing more than that,” she says.
The expert highlights that the flu vaccine should be taken once a year and aims both to contain the spread of the virus and to protect the vaccinated person – flu poses a risk of death for children, the elderly and immunosuppressed people.
