Limited product selection, minimalist furnishings and aggressive marketing: the arrival of Aldi and Lidl in the 2000s changed Swiss retail. Today, German discounters are delighting more and more customers. But do they keep what they promise? Or to put it another way, do they really offer lower prices than the competition, as they claim?

The broadcast A Good Hear from RTS wanted to check this. She compared the prices at Coop, Migros, Denner, Aldi and Lidl. A list of 30 staples purchased from all five stores on the same day. And every time we select the cheapest products available.

The result, reports RTS, was surprising. Denner, the long-established Swiss discounter, has the most expensive shopping basket at 181.67 francs. The difference to the competitors is considerable, as the ranking shows:

  • Denner: 181.67 francs
  • Migros: 170.37 francs
  • Coop: 167,82 Franken
  • Aldi: 166.59 francs
  • Lidl: 162.05 francs
  • The fact that there were no inexpensive minced steaks at Denner on the day of purchase tipped the scales against Denner, explains RTS. The discounter defends itself by saying that it regularly offers these types of products.

    Coca-Cola and M-Budget

Aside from Denner, RTS notes that the differences between the four remaining providers are quite moderate – around eight francs for a purchase of more than 160 francs. Aldi and Lidl are actually cheaper than their Swiss competitors.

What doesn’t change, or changes only slightly, are the prices of branded products, reports RTS. Coca-Cola, Parfait, Ovaltine or Nutella are sold everywhere at the same or almost the same price, sometimes in the same packaging.

Another observation: Around 70 percent of the products purchased from Migros and Coop were labeled Prix Garantie or M-Budget. These two low-price lines were introduced around 20 years ago to counteract the threat of German discounters entering the market. (asi)

For generations, the morning clatter of garbage collection was part of everyday life in Switzerland. It came from the hot-dip galvanized trash cans of the resourceful Zurich entrepreneur Jakob Ochsner.

The entrepreneur’s son Jakob Ochsner (1858–1926) is a widely traveled man. He learned to build and repair carts from his father, a wheelwright from Oberhallau in Schaffhausen, but he soon moved overseas. In Chicago, the young Ochsner realizes that not only are the possibilities limitless, but also the problems: unimaginable amounts of waste are piling up in the streets and stinking to high heaven.
