He Father Lester Rafael Zayas Díaz He delivered a homily on December 24, Christmas Eve, in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parishwhere he confessed his doubt about what he should say to a people who live in darkness and hopelessness.
“I confess something to you, perhaps this homily is the most difficult for me to pronounce since I began my priestly ministry. What can you say to a hopeless people“In the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ?” asked the priest.
Zayas emphasized that he is not “a political priest” and made it clear that such pretensions are far from his interests, but he could not avoid touching on hard topics of Cuban reality in his mass, because it is in reality where God is found.
“The real thing hurts us, reality weighs on us, what we have in front of us costs us. (…) God came to a world in crisis and continues to come to a world in crisis. Crises make us strong, they make us place the value of what is fundamental in what is authentically valid,” he said.
He appealed to the importance of keep hope alivebet on the truth even if it hurts, maintain a spirit of solidarity, reject the confrontation of Cubans against Cubans and always love your neighbor, even if you are far from this land.
“There is hope for Cuba. There is so much good in store, so much love waiting for each of us that there is no need to fear, because God will continue to come to this earth. (…) In the midst of a reality that seems to be falling apart, the only thing we feel strongly is the truth of God,” said Zayas.
