A fire broke out on Monday at the Europa-Park amusement park in Rust, Germany. The fire is under control and two firefighters were slightly injured, the park spokesperson said.

The park spokesperson said areas near the fire were quickly evacuated and the park was subsequently closed. Visitors were able to return to their hotels in the early evening and the park will be able to open on Tuesday, he said on Twitter.

The fire broke out around 4:40 p.m. in a technical room in the park. A thick, tall column of black smoke quickly rose over the park.

According to information from several media, it is the attraction “Zauberwelt der Diamanten” which was affected, where the Alpenexpress and the Wildwasserbahn pass.

Another fire in 2018

Europa-Park is the largest amusement park in Germany and one of the largest in Europe. Last year, more than six million people visited the complex with its roller coasters and other attractions in Ortenau, near the Franco-German border, which was a record.

On May 26, 2018, a large fire had already taken place there: The theme areas Scandinavia and Holland had been largely destroyed by the flames. Restaurants, shops and the “Pirates in Batavia” carousel had been destroyed.

According to the public prosecutor, the fire was due to a technical failure and had caused millions of francs in damage. Seven members of the security forces and firefighters were slightly injured.
