Large-scale operation by the fire department in Poppenbüttel: A car fire broke out in the underground car park of a residential building on Thursday – a large column of smoke suddenly appeared over the district. Several people are brought to safety in a supermarket and residents receive a warning via an app. And two rescuers are injured, some seriously.
According to information from the fire department, emergency services were called to a house on Sonnenhöhe Street at around 3:05 p.m. From there, residents reported a fire in the underground car park. A gasoline-powered car burst into flames for an unknown reason, and the fire spread to two other cars. A total of 14 vehicles were parked there – all petrol or diesel, as the fire department emphasized in the evening.
Poppenbüttel: Heavy smoke development – evacuation
A large column of smoke could already be seen on the way there. The operations manager immediately called for reinforcements. The house had to be evacuated because of the heavy smoke. A total of 20 people were brought to safety in a nearby café in an Edeka supermarket. They were checked for injuries and treated by paramedics and an emergency doctor. Some had suffered shock.
Firefighters injured – house no longer habitable
Two firefighters suffered circulatory problems during the operation due to the intense heat. One rescuer was seriously injured. Both were treated by the emergency services and admitted to hospital for treatment.

The extinguishing work was difficult because of the winding corridors leading to the underground car park. It wasn’t until 6:28 p.m. that the fire was completely extinguished and the all-clear was given. The Hamburg fire department was deployed with 100 emergency services and three fire engines.
The heat caused major damage to the concrete walls – ironmongery was partially exposed. A structural engineer declared the house uninhabitable and accommodation for the residents had to be organized.

The warning apps “Nina” and “Katwarn” triggered during the operation: “Smoke gases from a fire can endanger you in the Hamburg-Poppenbüttel area. The cloud of smoke is moving towards the north / east,” said the official warning. Sasel was also affected. Residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed.

The fire also had consequences for traffic: According to the police, there were temporary traffic delays on Ring 3, which is close to the scene.
