Saturday evening, around 8:20 p.m., one of the fire engines and its crew were the target of fireworks in Laeken, avenue de l’Arbre Ballon.
The intervention vehicle was dispatched to the scene for an open fire. “When we arrived on site, 2 trash containers on wheels were on fire. When getting out of the pumper, the vehicle and the crew immediately came under horizontal fire from fireworks,” explains spokesperson Walter Derieuw.
As there was no risk of the fire spreading to the surrounding area, the responders moved to safety and left the scene. The police were called to the scene. After the police arrived, the belligerents fled and the extinction was carried out.
“The adjutant, responsible for the pump, had the clear impression that it was an ambush. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among our colleagues, nor any damage to the pump. Although impressed by the incident and faced with the incomprehension of this act of violence, our comrades continued their guard,” concludes Walter Derieuw.
