The assault struck deep into the Ukrainian capital just hours before dawn. According to Mayor Vitali Klitsjko, three individuals sustained injuries as missile debris rained down on populated areas, including the historic Pechersk district.
Explosions reverberated across the city skyline as air defense batteries tracked incoming projectiles. But Kyiv was not the only target in the crosshairs.
Central Ukraine absorbed a heavy pounding. Cities like Kremenchuk and Kryvy Rih faced a brutal combination of conventional missiles, gliding bombs, and drones.
Years of continuous bombardment have depleted Kyiv’s stockpile of interceptor missiles, leaving ballistic threats particularly difficult to stop. While the United States recently granted permission for Patriot interceptor missiles to be produced directly within Ukraine, Washington is not footing the bill.
Moscow Sky Darkened by Hundreds of Drones
While central Kyiv burned, the skies above Russia told a remarkably similar story of aerial saturation. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that Ukraine launched one of its largest drone operations yet against the region around the Russian capital.
Russian authorities claimed roughly 600 drones participated in the overnight wave, with the vast majority intercepted before reaching their targets. Even so, the sheer volume overwhelmed regional defenses in places, resulting in three reported injuries on the Russian side.
Ukrainian media outlets pointed to a specific logistical casualty during the counter-strike: a warehouse belonging to the major online retailer Wildberries was reportedly hit. The facility handled items that included military gear and drone components, making it a prime tactical node in the supply chain feeding the front lines.
But the cross-border chaos did not stop at the immediate combat zones.
NATO’s Border Flank and the Romanian Intercept
Further south, the war’s ripples crossed sovereign European borders. Romanian authorities confirmed that a Spanish fighter jet operating under NATO command scrambled to intercept and shoot down a drone near Galați.
The unmanned aircraft had slipped across the border from Moldova into Romanian airspace. This incident is far from isolated.
Drones have drifted or flown into Romanian territory dozens of times since the invasion began. Last month marked a pivot when Romanian F-16s shot down an intruding device for the first time.
