Fireworks Bans in Belgium: A Comprehensive Overview by Gaia and Provincial Authorities

Walloon Brabant stands out as the champion of the ban since all its municipalities exclude fireworks for the end-of-year celebrations (unless written authorization from the mayor), according to data collected by Gaia. Hainaut follows closely with 90% of local authorities having banned this type of celebration. The province of Namur closes the top 3 with 71% of municipalities banning fireworks. In Liège, six out of ten municipalities are moving in this direction, compared to only 32% in the province of Luxembourg.

To achieve these results, Gaia examined the general police regulations (RGP) of each Walloon police zone, as well as the websites of the 262 municipalities in the south of the country. Indeed, a mayor can decide to prohibit fireworks if this measure is absent from the RGP, which concerns several municipalities at the same time. At the end of November, the association also sent a letter to local authorities, asking them to ban fireworks. However, it only received around twenty responses.

Strong measure in East Flanders for New Year: the province bans all fireworks

“Twenty-nine percent (i.e. 76 Walloon municipalities) still authorize” the firing of pyrotechnic devices, notes Gaia, which includes in this category bans limited to public roads as well as those with an exception for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. New Year. In addition, 2% of Walloon municipalities “do not have clear information on their website, or make no reference to fireworks in their RGP”, specifies the organization.

Gaia is calling for a “firm” ban for individuals and exclusive use of low-noise fireworks by municipal professionals who “absolutely wish to maintain this tradition”.

The province of East Flanders has decided to ban the possession and shooting of fireworks from December 29 to January 2, to protect against the risk of wind gusts forecast between 55 and 75 km/h.

The Brussels-Capital Region has also issued a ban, from December 15 to January 3, but with a completely different perspective: the capital wants to avoid acts of vandalism and the spread of small fires.
