Firing of HC Biel Coach Matikainen: Steinegger Takes Over as Sports Director

2024-02-25 18:49:09

HC Biel, tenth in the National League, released their coach Petri Matikainen with immediate effect. The team is taken over by sports director Martin Steinegger.

On Saturday, the Zealanders lost 5-0 on the ice of Rapperswil, thus endangering a ranking allowing them to participate in the play-in. The club’s board was quick to react by dismissing coach Petri Matikainen and his assistant Juha Vuori.

Matikainen took over at the end of last season from Antti Törmanen, who was forced to retire following cancer. But the transplant never went down well with the former coach of Klagenfurt in Austria. The defeat conceded on Friday once morest Fribourg-Gottéron at home had doomed the Zealanders’ hopes of finishing in the top 6. It was 24 hours before the disaster in Rapperswil.
