First in France: a cat receives damages for… “animal harm”

Convicted of animal harm, the man was found guilty of acts of cruelty which caused the death of his cat. It was in Lille that justice decided. The case concerned a cat named Lanna, who died on July 14, 2023, following receiving several blows to the head from a wooden slat.

”For the first time in France, the animal’s harm has been recognized and symbolically compensated. One more step towards the evolution of animal rights”greeted the lawyer on her Instagram account.

He is also now prohibited from keeping a pet permanently. In his defense, the condemned man assured that the cat had just scratched his autistic son.

Convictions for “serious abuse” or “cruelty” towards animals have already been handed down, but this is the first time that harm has been recognized in favor of an animal.
