It’s supposed to be a May march like it used to be. So today, on May 1st, after a two-year break due to the pandemic, the SPÖ Vienna is again inviting people to what is probably its most important event of the year, the traditional May parade on Vienna’s Rathausplatz.

“Resolutely go the way of Vienna” is the motto under which all 23 district organizations and friendly organizations march in a star to the inner city. From around 9.00 a.m. all participating groups should then gather on the town hall square. There are no pandemic-related requirements for the march, but red masks will be distributed, it said. The event had to be canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

Together, comrades will sing the song of labor and the Internationale on Labor Day. The speeches that follow are just as traditional. This year the chairman of the SPÖ Vienna, Mayor Michael Ludwig, the president of the Chamber of Labor Renate Anderl, the women’s chairwoman of the SPÖ Vienna, Marina Hanke and the SPÖ chairwoman Pamela Rendi-Wagner have their say.

Traditional May Festival in the Prater

After the event on Rathausplatz, visitors will be welcomed in front of the SPÖ party headquarters on Löwelstrasse. The guests are provided with culinary delights, there is music, children’s entertainment and a book stand.

From 2 p.m. the traditional May Day festival of the faction of social democratic trade unionists takes place in the Prater together with the Vienna Cultural Service and the Vienna Prater Association. The very first May Day celebrations took place there in 1890. And the launderette Karl-Marx-Hof invites you to an open house on May 1st from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
