First suspensions –

Dominican pitchers Génesis Cabrera, of the Toronto Blue Jays, and Yohan Ramírez, of the New York Mets, received three-game suspensions yesterday for being involved in incidents in separate games, announced yesterday the vice president of Major League Baseball for operations, Michael Hill.

The Major Leagues also reported that manager Carlos Mendoza was suspended one game as a result of Ramírez’s actions.

Cabrera was penalized for his actions in the bench-clearing incident during the bottom of the seventh inning of Toronto’s 5-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday. The incident in the Stripes-Blue Jays game in St. Petersburg was precipitated when Cabrera had an exchange of words with José Caballero, Tampa Bay’s Panamanian shortstop.

Ramirez was penalized for intentionally throwing at the body of Milwaukee’s Rhys Hoskins during the seventh inning of the Mets’ 7-6 loss on Saturday.

JUSTIN TURNER homered and drove in four runs, and the Toronto Blue Jays split the 4-game series by beating the Tampa Bay Rays 9-2 yesterday.

After winning the first 8-1 on Thursday, the Blue Jays were outscored 13-3 in losses in the next two games. Toronto is 20-35 in road games against Tampa Bay since the start of the 2018 season.

IN ARIZONA, Christian Walker had a two-run homer, Brandon Pfaadt (1-0) pitched five solid innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 5-1.

The Diamondbacks won three of four games in the opening series for both teams. Arizona dominated much of the weekend, outrunning Colorado 32-14.

DOMINICAN Enmanuel Valdez hit a three-run homer, Garrett Whitlock pitched five effective innings and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-1.

Valdez, replacing the injured Vaughn Grissom at second base, lined out to right in the fourth inning after starting the season 0-8.

IN MIAMI, Oneil Cruz ran home on Jason Delay’s bunt during the 10th inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Miami Marlins 9-8 to complete a four-game sweep in the opening series.

The Dominican Cruz started in the tenth inning as a pinch runner for the Mexican Rowdy Téllez. He reached third when reliever Tanner Scott (0-1) made an error on Alika Williams’ sacrifice attempt.

Téllez hit a three-run homer to put the Pirates up 7-6 in the seventh.

WILL BENSON and Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit consecutive two-out home runs in the ninth inning, propelling the Cincinnati Reds to clinch the opening series, beating the Washington Nationals 6-5.

Cincinnati trailed 5-4 when Jonathan India hit a two-out double off Kyle Finnegan (0-1). Benson hit a splitter on the first pitch to center field. Encarnacion-Strand sent another similar pitch into the left field seats as the Reds players filed out of the dugout to celebrate.

IN BALTIMORE, Reid Detmers gave the Angels much-needed ERA on the mound, allowing one run in five innings to help Los Angeles avoid a sweep in the opening series with a 4-1 victory over the Orioles.

TREA TURNER capitalized after a third out was disallowed after a review and hit the single that drove in the tying run and Alec Bohm drove in two runs in the seventh inning as the Philadelphia Phillies came back from behind and beat the Braves 5-4 from Atlanta.—AP
