Presumably on October 24, 79 AD, a massive eruption shook the volcano Vesuvius and the surrounding area. Within just a few days, the flourishing cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were covered by a 20-meter-high layer of lava, and thousands of people died in the inferno.
