2023-11-15 13:00:00

As of January 1st, 156,619 people lived in the city of Salzburg. At the same time, Flachgau had 157,440 citizens, which means a slight growth advantage in both absolute numbers and percentage points. “Flachgau is now not only the most populous district in the state of Salzburg. It has also grown by far the most in recent years,” says Gernot Filipp, head of Salzburg state statistics. In the last ten years alone, more than 12,500 people from Flachgau have been added (plus 8.8%). “In the past 30 years, Flachgau has recorded a population growth of 26.2 percent, 3.5 times as high as the city, which explains why this overtaking maneuver was only a matter of time,” says Filipp.

The city of Salzburg is only ahead of Flachgau in terms of population growth if you look at a much longer period of time. Between 1869 and today, Flachgau grew by 311.5 percent, while the city of Salzburg grew by 453.6 percent.

The future forecast of the Salzburg state statistics is clear: in 20 years over 600,000 people will live in the state (currently: 568,000). Flachgau will then have 173,000 inhabitants, while the city of Salzburg is clearly behind with around 165,000 predicted inhabitants.

The increase is particularly strong among the older population. While there are around 112,000 people over 65 nationwide today, there will be 162,000 by 2042. The number of people over 85 will more than double. 19 percent of Flachgau’s population were 65 years or older at the beginning of the year. 18 people in the district were at least 100 years old as of January 1st.

Tennengau is “younger”

This year, Flachgau had to give up the title of “youngest district” to neighboring Tennengau for the first time in decades. “The distance to Tennengau has steadily decreased in recent years. This year, for the first time, Tennengau is a little ‘younger’ than Flachgau,” confirms Gernot Filipp when asked by Flachgauer Nachrichten. While the Tennengau population is on average 42.5 years old, the people of Flachgau are slightly older, with an average age of 42.8 years.
