Flag-raising Ceremonies in Hong Kong Universities Celebrating China’s 74th Anniversary – People’s Daily Online

People’s Daily Online, Hong Kong, October 1 (Reporter Chen Ran) Hong Kong universities held flag-raising ceremonies on October 1 to celebrate the 74th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and express their love and blessings for the motherland.

The University of Hong Kong (referred to as: HKU) held a flag-raising ceremony at the HKU Centenary Campus. The ceremony began at 10 a.m., accompanied by the majestic national anthem, the five-star red flag, the bauhinia regional flag and the University of Hong Kong flag were raised. Chairman of the University Council Wang Peishi, President Zhang Xiang, and Chief Vice-President Wang Yujian, together with members of the University Council and Academic Affairs Committee, deans of colleges, staff and students, participated in the flag-raising ceremony to wish the motherland prosperity.

The flag-raising ceremony of the Chinese University of Hong Kong was held at 10:30 a.m. at the flag-raising platform on the central staircase of the campus. The national flag guard composed of students was responsible for raising the flag. Chairman of the University Council Cha Yichao, President Duan Chongzhi, Executive Director Wang Xuanhua and Deputy Director Chang Xueying of the Talent Liaison Office of the Talent Work Leading Group of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee in Hong Kong and Macao, and the School of Social Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Emeritus Professor Joseph Tsang attended the flag-raising ceremony together with about 160 people including university trustees and management, college and school representatives, university staff, students and alumni.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) held a flag-raising ceremony on campus. HKUST Deputy Superintendent Chen Zuze, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Shun Xiangyang, President Ye Yuru, Chairman of the Advisory Committee Liao Changcheng and other senior university managers officiated at the ceremony. More than 300 HKUST teachers and students, alumni, staff and family members participated, and more than 14,000 people watched online. The flag-raising team at the ceremony was composed of the Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force, of which five members were current HKUST students.

The flag-raising ceremony of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU for short) was presided over by Huang Ka-chun, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Mui Yin-cheong, President of City University. More than 200 CityU members attended the ceremony. A group of university management, faculty and student representatives witnessed the national flag, regional flag and school flag rising slowly to celebrate the National Day. An honor guard composed of City University students marched to the stage, performing a series of carefully choreographed movements with solemnity and precision.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (referred to as: PolyU) held a flag-raising ceremony at the University Square, the new landmark on campus. More than a thousand guests, teachers and students, including Wu Cheng, Deputy Minister of the Department of Education and Science and Technology of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of PolyU Lam Tai Fai, President Teng Jinguang and university management attended the flag-raising ceremony, including about 70 people from Tsinghua University who visited PolyU University teachers and students, together wish the country a prosperous country and Hong Kong prosperity and stability. The flag-raising ceremony was conducted by the PolyU student flag-raising team.

Hong Kong Baptist University (abbreviated as: HKBU) held a flag-raising ceremony on campus. About 150 people including members of the HKBU Council, university executives, faculty, alumni and students attended the ceremony. The flag-raising team of HKBU students is responsible for hoisting the national flag of the People’s Republic of China, the regional flag of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the HKBU school flag during the ceremony.

Lingnan University held a flag-raising ceremony at the campus auditorium. Guests present included the Chairman of the University Council, members of the University Council, Acting President, Associate Vice-President, department heads, faculty and students, etc.

The Metropolitan University of Hong Kong (referred to as Metropolitan University) also held a flag-raising ceremony. About 200 people including members of the Board of Trustees, university management, faculty and students attended. Duda stated that this event is the first National Day flag-raising ceremony after the COVID-19 epidemic. It brings together Dudu members to celebrate the glorious development achievements of the motherland and wishes the country a prosperous country and Hong Kong prosperity and stability.
