In total, Flanders had 1.25 million cattle, 5.4 million pigs and 45.5 million poultry.

The president of the Federation of Young Farmers discusses the blockage in Brussels: “This time, we are going to innovate”

The pig sector remains the most important within Flemish agriculture, with a production value of 1.3 billion euros (out of a total of 6.3 billion euros in 2021) ahead of dairy farming ( 1.1 billion euros in turnover) and market gardening (940 million euros).

Flemish agriculture represents 10% of total Flemish greenhouse gas emissions, at 7.7 million tonnes of C02 equivalent. Since 2008, these emissions have observed a slight upward trend.

Like his Walloon counterpart, the Flemish farmer is increasingly older, with an average age of 56 years, compared to 52 years in 2009. Aging is accompanied by difficulty in passing on farms.

The discontent of Flemish farmers is reflected in the figures: asked to rate their well-being, they give an average score of 6.5 whereas the Flemish in general give themselves a score of 7.3. The association “Boeren op een Kruispunt”, whose aim is to help farmers suffering psychologically, has also noted an increase in unique reports to its services, to 302.

Despite these difficulties, Flanders displays productivity results among the best in Europe, with a production value of 255,000 euros per farm, which places it only behind the Netherlands and Denmark. Dependence on European subsidies is also quite low. “We are thus twice on the European podium,” rejoiced Minister Jo Brouns.

The Flemish minister promised to take advantage of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU to influence the common agricultural policy, mentioning in particular the problem of administrative burdens.
