Flemish Nationalist Party Leader Urges Flemish Autonomy for Belgium’s Prosperity

The leader of the Flemish nationalist party once again mentioned this idea on Sunday during the family day organized in Plopsaland, near De Panne. With 10,000 registrations, this event has been sold out for two months.

In his speech, Bart De Wever stressed the “incredibly important” nature of the upcoming elections. “We will need you more than ever, because the outcome of the history of the N-VA is within reach. At the federal level, nothing is going well. Belgium is rushing, rudderless, towards the financial abyss. While in Flanders, all vacant jobs are not finding takers, Vivaldi has significantly increased, on the orders of the PS, benefits for long-term unemployment,” declared Mr. De Wever.

For the president of the N-VA, “with Belgium, the bottom of the abyss is now in sight. And all the Flemish parties know it.”

But for Mr. De Wever, every crisis is also a challenge and a tremendous opportunity. “The challenge is to tell the truth: that without Flemish autonomy we will not be able to maintain our prosperity and that only the N-VA is capable of shaping this autonomy,” he said. “No one else will do it. Neither the Vivaldi supporters nor the extremists. Only the N-VA has developed confederalism, only the N-VA has the conviction to carry it out and only the N-VA has the people who can give it shape.”

Bouchez enjoys “limited credibility”

Questioned by the Belga agency, Mr. De Wever also reacted to statements by the president of the MR, Georges-Louis Bouchez, during the broadcast of “Zevende dag” (Eén-VRT). He said he was in favor of the installation of a federal government on the “Swedish” model, associating the MR and the N-VA each obtaining 20% of the votes as a basis, in preference to a renewal of the Vivaldi, whose left wing associating socialists and ecologists takes up too much space in his eyes.

The president of the French-speaking liberals considered it strange that Bart De Wever wanted to ally himself with the PS. But Bart De Wever firmly rejected this offer from the president of the MR.

“Why did he come in this case with a Vivaldi-type coalition with the Greens? Bouchez is swimming in the Red Sea, but he is clinging to the Flemish situation,” declared the president of the N-VA, who intends to “respect the will of Walloon democracy”.

“It’s Bouchez’s problem,” who enjoys “limited credibility,” according to him. “I do not share Mr. Bouchez’s analysis. We are moving towards institutional change and nothing else,” concluded Bart De Wever.
