At an airport in southern India, a passenger has reportedly been caught with 47 snakes and two lizards in his luggage. The man wanted to smuggle the pythons from the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, Indian and Malaysian media wrote on Tuesday, citing the customs authorities. He was stopped at Tiruchirapalli airport in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu by officers who found the luggage suspicious.

A closer inspection revealed dozens of reptiles in perforated containers. The man from Chennai, India, was arrested.

The snakes and lizards were confiscated and are to be brought back to Malaysia. It was not initially known who the final buyer of the animals was and what they were intended for.

Pythons are not venomous, instead killing their prey by entwining them. There are numerous different subspecies, some of which are smaller than one meter. However, some python species are among the largest snakes in the world with lengths of up to six meters.
