More than 170 people have died in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a result of heavy rainfall and flooding. “We have regarding 176 dead,” South Kivu Governor Theo Ngwabije said during a visit to the affected area. The number is provisional. “We also have regarding 100 missing,” he added.

Several villages in the Kalehe area west of Lake Kivu were flooded when rivers burst their banks following heavy rains, the region’s deputy administrator said. The flood swept away hundreds of homes and also “surprised vendors and their customers in the markets,” he added.

Kalehe MP Vital Muhini told a local radio station the floods had caused “devastating human and material damage”. He spoke of around 150 fatalities and many missing. 72 people died in Chabondo village, 31 in Bushungu village and 45 in Nyamukubi village.

A member of a rescue team said 68 bodies had been found. The search for missing people continues.
