Floods near Liège: insufficient storm basins?

The floods hit the province of Liège once more this Sunday, and more particularly the region of Hannut. The water has sometimes risen more than a meter. Some 200 homes have been affected, and it will still take time before the neighborhood can return to normal life. The rain also caused damage in downtown Hannut, where cracked houses are in an unstable situation.

Several residents of Hannut had long criticized the management of sewers and storm basins, which were supposed to collect a large amount of water in a short time. Three residents of the region, victims of flooding this Sunday, noticed the overflow of the storm basin near their homes, and confronted the director general of the municipality and an employee of the SPW. “The sheets are made, they must be implemented and budgeted for“, pleads the director. “We have our say, we are from the villagereplies Jean-Marie Lonay, a resident of Hannut. We normally have the right to know when you’re going to do it, before throwing away public money.
