Flor Anca: From Childhood Dreams to Broadway Stages – A Journey of Talent and Success

2023-08-21 03:39:06
Flor Anca was part of the jury of Canta Conmigo and even had the chance to sing on the Marcelo Tinelli program

A girl returned happy from school in William Morris, in the west of Greater Buenos Aires, because it was time to look at Chiquititas and immerse herself in their world. She would finish the program and in the solitude of her room she would put on the cassette or the CD -depending on which year we are talking about- and she would dance the entire record.

A woman who has behind her the experience of having been part of works such as Aladdin, Shrek, Young Frankenstein, Beauty and the Beast, Los locos Addams and Sugar, was called for a closed audition in which she danced alone. Shortly after, a call woke her up from her nap: they told her that she would be part of Heathers, in the version that would premiere in Calla Corrientes.

Crying took over her then. The tears of this woman were those of that girl, because both are the same person, Flor Anca, who would end up understanding that from her first steps she was preparing for that: to shine on stage. And always with the necessary encouragement at home so that each of her dreams were achieved.

“I was organizing everything for an hour to start doing a show -he recalls, about his childhood-, almost like today when I prepare for the theater: I showered, put on the clothes I had prepared, put on makeup, I did my hair, but in a very similar way to how I do it now. I don’t know why I had that in my head already at that age.”

Ready, the girl Flor played a game: “It consisted of moving the knob of the radio dial and where it stopped, she had to dance to the song that was playing. The challenge was to be able to interpret any song. But I never liked being seen, I always hid because I was embarrassed”. And it is that her shyness dominated her, and she preferred her passion to be a secret.

How strong that feeling must have been that she still remembers the moment her mother took her to her first dance class, when she was only four years old. “I ran away. The emotion was so great that I felt that I don’t know why, it made me run. It scared me to feel so much happiness, a very strange thing.”

From a very young age, Flor Anca was inclined towards dancing and acting.

“Ojos así”, by Shakira, sounded on the radio and a revolution in Arab dance began to envelop the world, especially when the famous MTV Unplugged was performed and the Colombian dance captivated everyone. Argentina, of course, would not be the exception. “One day we were walking down the street with my mom and we saw a little sign that said ‘Arab dances.’ I was already about 12, full Shakira, and I told my mom to write me down. Thus, Flor discovered in art a connection with her Syrian-Lebanese roots, and for five years she immersed herself in that world, letting herself be carried away by her movements and rhythms.

But there are paths that cannot be done alone, and the family support on which one stands and his dreams are as important as the journey itself. “My parents were key in all of this. They have always supported me and have never refused to take me to the places I wanted to go. They were and are key today, because I still receive their support. They are there, with me, ”she admits.

Each one of them, from their place: “My mother, a housewife, was the one who took me to classes, the one who was in charge of asking for a discount or a scholarship, because we couldn’t afford it and someone had to go out and talk. My father, a merchant, was more into the questions of ‘it’s not convenient for you to study here, it’s better for you in this other one’, he was the most visionary. I was 14 years old and he told me that in that studio in the neighborhood there was nothing to do anymore because I was the best, that I had to go to another place, but I didn’t want to leave because it was my place, my friends, my colleagues. One day he grabbed me and said ‘Do you want to dance in Boca Juniors or in Chacarita? I ask you this way so that you understand it, think about it like football’. And that’s when he took me to my first class with Margarita Fernández ”. That would be a turning point in his career.

Florencia’s last name -Anca- is synonymous with art, not only in the country, but in the world, and it is that despite having a letter modified for various reasons at the time of registering her arrival in the country, both Nancy Anka (remembered by Grande, Pá!) like the famous Paul Anka are part of his blood. “My aunt Nancy is my dad’s cousin, and Paul is my grandfather’s cousin. With the aunt we don’t see each other much, but we are always in contact. With Paul our relatives have not had contact for a long time. When he came to Argentina there was not, “he acknowledged.

The moment of professionalization would come in his career. “Suddenly I was taking dance classes and everything started happening, I never thought of anything. But falling in love and feeling that this was my thing was in the first jazz class and I had an image of having found myself, a ‘this is me’. But I always had contact with the professional, my teacher took me to places, we did shows and I also did some publicity, not just dancing, but acting. And everything went hand in hand, studying and doing”.

Throughout the years, Flor participated in various musicals and television programs. However, Happyland holds a special place in her heart. Working with musical theater idols and with Alfredo Arias, her favorite director, transformed her forever.

Life in the suburbs, far from the places where their activity is carried out, is usually cumbersome due to the different commitments, in addition to the schedules that are handled and the transport available to move. From performances, to classes or even long auditions, they usually take many hours a day, so at the age of 19 the fact of having been able to move to the Capital was also an important step, almost as much as what would happen in that same place a couple of years ago. of years later.

“I always kept the details of my sexual orientation to myself because I felt that they were not going to accept it, and one day at the age of 21 we were at my house and my mother asked me. And there I told him, but because I already felt armed and ready to share it with them. Until then, the talks on the subject were always with friends. She took it badly at that moment, I know, but the next day everything was fine, she called me and we talked about it. But yeah, he shocked her. My dad only found out when he was 23 or 24, and at that moment he cried with happiness and told me: ‘It’s great to hear from you, that you are free and whoever you want to be!’

In mid-2022, a call for a closed audition in the framework of the arrival of the musical comedy Heathers to local tables was a proposal that he could not refuse. And after the audition, the definition would come: “I was taking a nap and a call from Fer (Dente, the producer of the play) woke me up letting me know that I was staying, and there I started crying. I didn’t know what my character was going to be yet, but I was ready.”

Flor Anca is part of Heathers, the work that came to the country thanks to Fer Dente

In the work that shone during the winter holidays, she plays Heather Duke, accompanied by figures of the stature of Sofi Morando and Martu Loyato, who still do not believe the legion of followers of the original work that accompany this version, which will feature one last performance at the Buenos Aires Opera Theater next Sunday, August 26, to then begin the national tour with stops in Rosario and Córdoba.

“I did not experience it like another musical. More than a play, I felt it like a recital -Anca highlights about the experience-. It is something out of the ordinary in what I do. For example, going on stage and having them scream in despair, that doesn’t usually happen. My colleagues are a sweetheart, and Fer as a director made me fall in love. All fans of musical theater, very nerdy, and I love all of that. A group of good people.”

Flor Anca was also part of Sex, the work of José María Muscari

Despite all that has been achieved, Flor feels that she still has pending challenges, such as the dream of displaying all her magic in a one-man show where she can sing, dance and act. Also, of course, she wants to continue exploring more in acting and continue dancing, always dancing.

Because looking back at that girl who danced to the rhythm of Chiquititas in her house, Flor is convinced that she would tell her to keep dreaming, believing in herself. Because every dream, every passion, has the power to become a reality.
