Floreffe Fire: Former Carmel Convent Devastated by Suspicious Blaze

2023-08-28 05:50:00

The former Carmel of Floreffe, in the province of Namur, was largely destroyed by a suspicious fire overnight from Saturday to Sunday, say firefighters in the Val de Sambre area.

The emergency services were called around 2:00 a.m. and took several hours to put out the flames, not without air support. The origin of the fire might be accidental but remains unknown, homework has been requested by the Namur prosecutor’s office to clarify the situation.

The convent was no longer occupied by the Carmelites and had just been sold in order to be converted into a school. Work was underway in this direction.
