Florida could prohibit the use of social networks for minors under 16 years of age 2024-03-01 21:02:50

In the United States, the Florida Congress approved a new bill to prohibit the use of social networks by minors under 16 years of age.

We are talking about one of the most important restrictions of this type, which is named HB1 or Protection of Minors on the Internet.

This measure was approved by the House of Representatives with 108 votes in favor and 7 against. On the other hand, in the Senate, the project passed with 23 votes in favor and 14 against.

So, now this project is heading towards the office of the Governor of the state of Florida, Ron DeSantis. Therefore, this will decide whether the proposal is finalized in legislation or not.

Meanwhile, defenders of the project argue several reasons why the measure should be carried out. Among them is that it would help stop the increase in suicides and cyberbullying among minors.

What would the new law be like?

If Governor DeSantis signed the new legislation, social media platforms would be required to verify the age of account holders.

At the same time, the creation of profiles for minors under 16 years of age would be prohibited and existing ones that do not meet the requirement would be eliminated. In fact, most platforms currently require a minimum age of 13 years.

Without a doubt, the restriction would directly harm those social networks that have a large daily reach to children under 16 years of age. Here are platforms as popular as TikTok or Instagram.

The truth is that Governor DeSantis has not yet made a decision on the matter. However, everything seems to indicate that he does not agree with the proposal.

Openly, and through a press conference, he expressed that it is the duty of parents to control their children’s activity on social networks.
