Florida Keys offer new attractions

Die Florida Keys und Key West are among those Florida destinations that vacationers look to complement Miami and the Everglades year-round—or just because. This year there is a new attraction in the region, which is a chain of islands around 200 kilometers long and has been dubbed the most beautiful cul-de-sac in the world.

First there is the Bahia Honda State Park in the Lower Florida Keys: Miles of Sandspur Beach on the north side of this park recently reopened after a restoration. Overnight guests will again be able to use the Sandspur campsites with 73 sites for RVs and tents with electricity and water and 7 sites for tents only (without electricity). The park has two other sandy beaches and views of the Overseas Highway and the old railroad bridge of the former Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad. In addition, there are six huts on stilts in the park; visitors can also rent a kayak or book one of the daily snorkeling trips to Looe Key Reef.

Another attraction in the Florida Keys is reopening in September: The Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center at Key West’s Truman Waterfront Park then includes a new main exhibit that focuses on the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary concentrated. This marine reserve covers 3,800 square miles of water bodies. It is home to North America’s only living coral reef, expansive beds of seagrass and more than 6,000 species of marine life. Another exhibit is designed to highlight the mangroves of the Florida Keys and allow visitors to crawl and climb through lifelike mangrove branches
