Jake Waleri, 22, found the animal hiding in the grass. He had to fight to keep her from biting him, but he managed to immobilize her. On the recommendation of the specialists, the hunters killed the snake, since it is an invasive species.

Two young hunters from Florida, United States, found the largest python in that province and shared the shocking video in which one of them struggles to catch it. The publication made on their Instagram profile, where they are nicknamed Glade Boys, caused a sensation. The snake measures 5.8 meters (19 feet) and weighs more than 56 kilograms.

The title of “longest ever documented” python was endorsed by the NGO Conservancy of Southwest Florida. This snake took first place from a 5.7-meter Burmese python that was captured in the same region. In the video, you can see how Jake Waleri (22) found the snake hiding in the grass of Big Cypress National Preserve on July 10 at 1:00 a.m. (local time). The young man lunged at her and struggled for several minutes as the animal tried to bite him.

On the recommendation of wildlife experts, they killed the python and took it to the Conservancy headquarters, where they did the surveys and measurements. “We had this idea that these snakes got so big and now we have clear evidence,” Ian Easterling, a conservation biologist, told CBS. “Their genetic material may prove valuable for a future understanding of the founding population of South Florida. We will be collecting measurements and samples that will be distributed to our research collaborators,” he added.

Burmese pythons are non-venomous constrictors that became an invasive species in Florida. They live primarily in and around the Everglades (a wetland reserve) in the southern part of the state. On average, they measure just over two meters.

As specialists explain, this species became a threat to wildlife in the area because they eat mammals, birds and even alligators, while they have few natural predators other than humans.

This is why authorities recommend trapping and humanely euthanizing snakes. The state offers free Python Patrol training to learn how to identify snakes and report to specialists or kill them. To euthanize them, people must use a method that causes the animal to lose consciousness just before destroying its brain.
