  • After beef, eggs have also become more expensive.

  • Higher energy costs and the spread of bird flu contributed to the rise in prices.

  • Since eggs are used in numerous products, bread and pastries, for example, have also become more expensive.

In the 1990s, keeping laying hens in non-enriched (conventional) cages for egg production was banned. This resulted in the largest increase in egg prices to date, at ten percent. Now this value has been surpassed. The National Consumer Price Index reveals that the price of eggs has increased by a whopping 14 percent compared to 2022.

The Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) explains to the “Aargauer Zeitung” (paid article) the massive increase. He is the result of several events: grain was during the Ukraine war more expensive, this increase meant that the cost of concentrated feed for laying hens also increased.

Illegal imports in the US

There are other influencing factors from abroad. So the prices for eggs have risen even more massively elsewhere, writes the «Aargauer Zeitung». In Europe, prices have increased by 60 percent. In addition, supply is scarce. In northern Europe and the USA there is even said to be an egg shortage. Another factor is energy costs, which have risen significantly for many companies. This is also a consequence of the Ukraine war.

The situation in the USA is similar to that in Europe. Prices there have doubled or tripled. In the United States it is Bird flu particularly common, which can affect entire farms, a US producer tells Bloomberg. With egg prices soaring in the US, some Americans are trying to cut their grocery bills by buying eggs south of the border. The only problem: Eggs from Mexico cannot be imported into America. At some US-Mexico border crossings, seizures have increased by more than 300 percent in recent months, according to Bloomberg.

Effects on other products

Because eggs are used in a variety of products, the prices of other products also increase. For example bread (plus eleven percent), small breads (plus twelve percent) and pastries (plus twelve percent). A baker in Geneva reports in a survey: “We had to raise the prices by around ten percent and initially feared negative reactions, but the understanding is there and we have no discussions.”
