Food inflation: “we will not return to pre-crisis prices”, recognizes Bru

“We are not going to return to previous prices, but prices must increase more slowly,” explained the Minister of the Economy to Caroline Roux. “I know well that life is extremely difficult for millions of our compatriots,” he continued. But “the year 2024 will be better than the year 2023”, promises the tenant of Bercy, convinced “that in 2024, we will see an acceleration in the decline in prices”.

Advanced business negotiations

Bruno Le Maire also recalled that, to curb food inflation, the government had decided to bring forward the start date of commercial negotiations between producers and distributors, hoping that these negotiations would result in price reductions. THE President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron specified on Sunday that he wanted to find with large industrialists “an agreement on the moderation of margins in the sector” with “controllers who will carry out checks”.

Bruno Le Maire praised “a damn effective instrument”, the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) of which “several hundred agents” could be responsible for monitoring these margins. The latter can “take care of commercial negotiations, price controls on the shelves, monitor margins, rely on the Price and Margin Observatory,” the minister further assured. “Industrialists also have an interest in prices returning to normal so that there are consumers and their businesses can operate,” he added.

The bill intended to fight inflation was presented to the Council of Ministers on Wednesday. Bercy is targeting 75 largest manufacturers who “represent more than 50% of the market share,” the ministry told the press on Tuesday. The bill must now be discussed in Parliament.
