Expired meat gets a second chance

If the weather turns out to be rainier than predicted, there is often only one use for the grilled meat that has been over-purchased in retailers: conversion into biogas. Upon request, Swiss retailers do not provide exact figures on how many tons of meat end up in the biogas plant. According to research by “K-Tipp” from 2022, 5,000 tons of meat are disposed of every year in retail alone.
