Football: trained at Arsenal, Stephy Mavididi joins the Leopards!

The Anglo-Congolese footballer, Stephy Mavididi, is approaching the national team of the DRC -Democratic Republic of Congo-, and could play in the qualifiers for the CAN -African Cup of Nations- 2025, and those of the Cup of World 2026.

According to certain indiscretions, the Leicester City striker agreed to join the Leopards den, after discussions with the national coach of the DRC, Sébastien Desabre, last week in Great Britain. Like Axel Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan-bissaka, the 25-year-old ultimately opts for his country of origin, to the detriment of England, which is his adopted country.

Trained at Arsenal, Mavididi has scored 11 goals and provided 4 assists in 39 games for Leicester this season. He played in several major European clubs, including Juventus, Montpellier, Dijon and Preston North.

As a reminder, the Congolese selection finished 4th in CAN 2023, after being beaten by Bafana Bafana of South Africa, on penalties, last Saturday February 10. She was eliminated in the semi-final by Ivory Coast, winner of the competition.

Well before that, the Congolese Fauves finished in second position in Group F, with 3 points, behind the Atlas Lions of Morocco. The Congolese eliminated the Pharaons of Egypt and the national Syli of Guinea, respectively in the round of 16 and quarter-finals.

It should be noted that the Leopards will face the Teranga Lions of Senegal, next June, at the Abdoulaye Wade stadium in Dakar, as part of the 3rd day of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The DRC is 3rd in the group B, with 3 points, just behind Senegal and Sudan, who have 4 units each.
