Former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy has been acquitted in the recent trial of rape and attempted rape. The jury at Chester Crown Court found the 28-year-old Frenchman innocent, British news agency PA reported on Friday. He was accused of raping a woman, 29, at his Cheshire estate in 2018.

According to the indictment, the attempted rape of a 24-year-old also happened there two years later. Mendy tearfully accepted the acquittal, according to the PA. He had previously been acquitted of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in a separate trial. At the time, however, the jury could not agree on a decision on the two allegations that have now been renegotiated.

The Frenchman’s contract with Manchester City ended on July 1. When he switched from AS Monaco to Man City in 2017, he was the most expensive defender in the world with a transfer fee of 57.5 million euros.
