Ford has announced its upcoming affordable four-door electric pickup truck will be called the Ford Fathom. Rethinking the Clean-Sheet EV Architecture
For decades, automotive electrical engineering meant adding more wire. Traditional vehicle architectures rely on a sprawling web of more than one hundred discrete electronic control units (ECUs) scattered throughout the chassis. Ford’s California skunkworks took a radically different path for the Fathom.
By shifting to a zonal electronic architecture, the platform replaces those fragmented ECUs with a handful of powerful computers each controlling multiple domains. Fewer compute nodes mean shorter cable runs. It is a structural blueprint heavily inspired by the clean-sheet design iterations seen across emerging EV competitors in both domestic and international markets.
