Former Anti-Israel Activist Now Leads Pro-Israel Outreach After Life-Changing Experience

In July 2015, South African student activist Klaas Mokgomole arrived in Israel as a virulent anti-Israel youth leader for the Boycott, Divest, Sanction (BDS) movement. Expecting segregated facilities, his perspective radically shifted upon discovering integrated public spaces at Ben Gurion International Airport, ultimately leading him to spearhead pro-Israel outreach.

The Airport Encounter That Challenged a BDS Narrative

Landing at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport after a nearly nine-hour flight from Johannesburg, Klaas Mokgomole urgently sought out a gate agent. Desperate for a restroom, the South African university student asked where to find the “blacks only restroom.” According to Tazpit Press Service (TPS), the agent’s eyes widened in disbelief before pointing him toward a standard restroom.

Standing in the busy airport restroom, Mokgomole watched dumbfounded as Jews and Arabs walked in and out freely. Here is why that matters: it directly dismantled the core propaganda he had absorbed back home. As an outspoken youth leader of the African National Congress (ANC) and a student at the University of Witwatersrand, Mokgomole had been taught that racism in Israel ran so deep that Jewish citizens did not even share toilets with Black individuals or Arabs.

“To see within the first few moments after landing in Israel that this clearly is not the case marked a turning point for me,” Mokgomole recalled during a visit to Jerusalem, as reported by TPS and the Intermountain Jewish News (IJN).

Campus Radicalization and the Power of Unverified Claims

Before his eye-opening trip, Mokgomole occupied a prominent role in campus politics. As a star player on the University of Witwatersrand’s volleyball and netball teams, his willingness to speak out for marginalized groups propelled him into leadership within the ANC-aligned student structures. That activist zeal made him a prime target for the BDS movement.

Representatives from the BDS organization delivered slick presentations featuring PowerPoints and videos depicting dying babies to frame Israel as an apartheid state. “As a South African, being black, it sort of touched me,” Mokgomole explained to TPS and IJN.

Trusting these presentations as coming from friends, Mokgomole and his fellow student government members passed a sweeping resolution banning anything connected to Israel from campus. The ban targeted the Jewish Student Union, Israeli academics, sports teams, and artists. But there was a catch: they never authenticated the information.

“We didn’t authenticate the information, we just felt like it must be true and we have to fight it,” Mokgomole admitted. He later reflected that these campaigns crossed the line from anti-Zionism into antisemitism, noting that students simply did not know the difference at the time.

Escalation, Doubt, and the Pivot to Bridge-Building

Fueled by the steady stream of unverified claims, Mokgomole lashed out aggressively against anything connected to Israel. His actions included placing a severed pig’s head inside the kosher section of a local supermarket and storming the stage during an Israeli pianist’s campus recital—a disruption that ruined the performance and nearly resulted in his expulsion.

Facing disciplinary action and struggling to answer basic logical flaws within the BDS narrative, Mokgomole decided to witness the situation firsthand. That curiosity birthed a profound personal transformation. Moving away from vitriolic activism, he transitioned into a passionate peacemaker, dedicating his efforts to international bridge-building and pro-Israel outreach.
