Former DUP Leader Jeffrey Donaldson Sentenced to 15 Years for Historical Sexual Offences

Former Democratic Unionist Party leader Jeffrey Donaldson was sentenced to 15 years in prison at Newry Crown Court on Thursday, October 15, 2026, for a series of historical child sexual abuse offences. Judge Paul Ramsey described the fall of the 63-year-old politician as a catastrophic descent into disgrace, noting that he had shown no regret, apology, or shame since his conviction. 247newsaroundtheworld.com reported that Donaldson received 11 years for offences committed against his first victim and four years for crimes against a second victim, to run consecutively.

Judge Sentences Donaldson to Fifteen Years Behind Bars

Judge Ramsey structured the 15-year custodial term across two complainants who were children at the time of the offences. Complainant A and Complainant B were referenced anonymously throughout the legal proceedings. Donaldson was convicted of 18 historical charges in total, comprising one count of rape, four counts of gross indecency, and 13 counts of indecent assault spanning from 1985 to 2008.

As detailed by RTÉ, because of Northern Ireland sentencing laws in place during the period of his offences, Donaldson qualifies for an automatic 50 per cent remission. He will therefore serve seven and a half years behind bars before spending the remainder of his sentence on license. Alongside a prohibition against employment involving children and vulnerable adults, Donaldson received an indefinite placement on the sex offenders’ register and a 10-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order.

During the sentencing hearing, the judge noted that pre-sentence probation reports assessed Donaldson as presenting a medium likelihood of reoffending. Donaldson stood in the dock wearing a blue suit and white shirt, showing no emotion as the sentence was handed down. He has remained in Maghaberry Prison in County Antrim since the trial concluded in June and intends to appeal against the jury’s unanimous verdict.

Victims Describe Permanent Trauma During Sentencing Hearing

The trial, which opened on May 26, 2026, featured testimony from both victims. During sentencing, Judge Ramsey read extracts from their victim impact statements, noting that he had observed their demeanor during the proceedings and had no doubt about the permanent mark left by the abuse. One victim stated that her childhood was stolen and that the public nature of the trial had profoundly affected her life and career. The second victim addressed Donaldson directly in her statement, describing how the denial of the allegations had compounded the trauma.

The Public Prosecution Service stated that despite the devastation caused, Donaldson had never accepted responsibility or shown remorse for his actions.

Donaldson Resigns as Party Leader Following Court Appearance

On April 24, 2024, Donaldson and his wife, Eleanor Donaldson, appeared in court, where the full scope of the charges was outlined. Donaldson resigned as DUP leader, stating in his resignation letter that he would be “strenuously contesting the charges,” and subsequently relinquished his seat in the UK House of Commons in May 2024.

Following an arraignment hearing on September 10, 2024, where Donaldson entered a not-guilty plea to all 18 counts, the case proceeded to trial on May 26, 2026. Following a four-week court case featuring statements from the two complainants, a unanimous verdict of guilty on all 18 charges was delivered by the jury on June 22, 2026.

Meanwhile, Eleanor Donaldson, 60, was arrested alongside her husband and charged with aiding and abetting. Because she was found unfit to stand trial on medical grounds, her case proceeded through a non-criminal “trial of the facts,” in which she was found to have committed acts relating to five charges, including four of aiding and abetting her husband’s abuse. She is due to face a separate hearing in November to determine any non-custodial measures, such as a treatment or supervision order, and is appealing that outcome.

Conviction Ends Decades of High Level Unionist Politics

The conviction and sentencing of Jeffrey Donaldson mark the end of a nearly three-decade career at the highest levels of unionist politics in Northern Ireland. First elected as an MP in 1997 as a member of the Ulster Unionist Party, Donaldson was for nearly three decades one of the most prominent figures in unionist politics.

Gavin Robinson was appointed interim leader of the DUP following Donaldson’s resignation, later ratified in May 2024.

Donaldson is expected to pursue his appeal against the conviction while serving his sentence at Maghaberry Prison.
