Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff has revealed that former F1 driver Jerome D’Ambrosio has been appointed as the team’s ‘reserve team principal’. Recently, former Virgin and Lotus driver D’Ambrosio has often been alongside Wolff during grands prix as driver development director.
Previously, D’Ambrosio was team principal at Formula E team Venturi, where Wolff’s wife Susie also held a top role. French magazine Auto Hebdo reports that the 37-year-old Belgian D’Ambrosio has taken over many of the responsibilities previously held by Williams’ new team principal James Bowles at Mercedes F1. “If I miss the Grand Prix, Jerome will take my place,” Wolff admitted. “It’s only happened three times in 11 years, but it’s important to be prepared for it,” added the team principal and co-owner. “Jerome did a very good job last year in his role at Venturi.
