Former government spokesman Seibert becomes Germany’s ambassador to Israel. In a video message he addressed the Israeli population directly. The fact that both countries are “partners and friends” today cannot be taken for granted.

Former government spokesman Steffen Seibert becomes the new German ambassador to Israel. The 62-year-old confirmed this in a video message to the Israeli population on Twitter. There had already been reports about the possible new task in the spring; however, he had not confirmed it.

In the video address in Hebrew and English, Seibert emphasized the friendship and partnership between Germany and Israel. “For us Germans, for me personally, that means so much,” he said. “After the barbarism and monstrous crimes of the Shoah, friendship with Israel is not something we Germans can take for granted.”

Seibert was government spokesman under Chancellor Angela Merkel for more than eleven years. He previously worked as a television journalist for ZDF. In Israel, he takes over the post from the previous ambassador, Susanne Wasum-Rainer, who had her last day of work there at the end of June.
