On this day, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office Anti-Corruption Investigation Division 3 (Director Kim Yong-sik) summoned former High Prosecutors’ Office Chief Lim as a suspect on charges of violating the Attorney-at-Law Act and is investigating him. Former High Prosecutors’ Office Chief Lim is suspected of receiving money and valuables under the pretext of covering up the Baekhyeon-dong incident when Jeong Paul, CEO of Asia Developers, a private business in Baekhyeon-dong, was being investigated by the prosecution. Former High Prosecutors’ Office Chief Lim’s position is that the 100 million won received from Representative Chung was a “legitimate cost of hiring a lawyer,” but the prosecution suspects that the fee included funds for the purpose of requesting that the investigation be suppressed.

The previous day, the prosecution also summoned Kwak Jeong-gi, former head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Intelligence Crime Investigation Team (Chief Inspector), who was charged with the same charges, as a suspect. Former Superintendent Kwak received about 800 million won in attorney fees when CEO Jeong was under police investigation. Prosecutors suspect that some of this money is also compensation for suppressing the investigation. On the other hand, former Superintendent Kwak completely denies the charges.

In the process of investigating the Baekhyeon-dong incident, the prosecution arrested and indicted real estate agent Lee (68) on the 20th of last month on charges of solicitation under the Special Price Act. Mr. Lee is accused of receiving approximately 1.3 billion won on several occasions from May of last year to June of this year under the pretext of covering up the prosecution’s Baekhyeon-dong investigation from CEO Jeong, who was under investigation for suspicions of preferential treatment for the development of Baekhyeon-dong. The prosecution believes that Mr. Lee introduced former High Prosecutors’ Office Chief Im and former Superintendent Kwak to Representative Jeong.

According to Mr. Lee’s indictment, Mr. Lee told Representative Jeong in May, “This is not a case that can be resolved by a single chief prosecutor. “We need to talk to the Minister of Justice or the Prosecutor General,” he said, adding, “If you have 1 billion won, you can talk to the above and cover up the Baekhyeon-dong development corruption investigation, so please make 200 million won in cash first.” Also, when the prosecution requested an arrest warrant for Representative Jeong, “There was a 1 in 100 chance of finding someone who could prevent the arrest, but we succeeded.” That person played golf with the warrant judge the day before yesterday. He also said, “He can prevent the issuance of an arrest warrant through that person.” It was found that Mr. Lee received a total of 1,336.16 million won from CEO Jeong in this way.
