New Delhi: One of the key players in the national team during the golden age of Indian hockey, Varinder Singh, has passed away. He was 75 years old. He was an integral part of the Indian team that put the stick to unforgettable achievements in the seventies. A two-time Olympic hockey player, Varinder played a key role in helping India win the 1975 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

India made history by defeating Pakistan 2-1 in the final. India, who had won the World Cup hockey consecutively since 1928, were able to lift the trophy after their departure in 1960.

After winning a bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics, Varinder Singh was still a key member of the team when India won a silver medal at the 1973 World Cup in Amsterdam. He won silver medals at the 1974 and 1978 Asian Games. Participated in the 1975 Montreal Olympics. In 2007, the country honored him with the Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award.
