Following the lightning attack by Hamas, the former leaders expressed concern under the leadership of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak called the attack by Hamas the biggest blow to Israel since its creation. Barak also said that he does not think Netanyahu is fit to continue as prime minister even after this devastating incident.

Dan Halutz, the former chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces, has called for Netanyahu to resign. Defense chiefs, including the Chief of Staff, are expected to step down taking full responsibility for the conflict. He said he thinks the prime minister will follow suit. The reaction of the former intelligence officer was that the current government is dysfunctional.

Netanyahu’s attempt to amend the judicial laws led to massive public protests. There are many accusations against Netanyahu such as fraud, breach of public trust and bribery. It was in this situation that Hamas launched a lightning attack on Israel. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, defense chiefs including army chief Herzei Halevi, and Ronan Barr, the head of the domestic intelligence agency Shin Bet, all acknowledged and apologized for the government’s failure.

A recent poll found that 80 percent of Israelis think Netanyahu should take responsibility for the Hamas attack. In a separate poll earlier this month, 56 percent said Netanyahu should resign after the war ends.
