On the 12th, former President Elbegdorj wrote on He posted this post on the 8th after President Putin justified the invasion of Ukraine by saying, “Ukraine has historically been Russian land,” in an interview with former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson.

It is a mockery of President Putin’s claim to justify the invasion of Ukraine solely by citing Russia’s past under the rule of the Mongol Empire and the fact that it was once part of Russia.

According to President Putin’s logic, the Mongol Empire ruled all of Russia in the past, so the Mongol invasion of Russia should be justified. The map shows the territory of the Mongols during the 13th century, when they ruled China, Russia, the Middle East, and most of Europe.

The post received a series of responses defending it. A Ukrainian media outlet reported the news, saying, “Mongolia’s former president taught Putin a lesson from history.”

Michael McFaul, a Stanford University professor who served as the U.S. ambassador to Russia from 2012 to 2014, retweeted the post with admiration. This post received a warm response, with more than 100,000 likes and 2,400 comments in just one day.

Former Mongolian President Elbegdorj served as President of Mongolia twice from 2009 to 2017. In the late 1980s, he founded the Mongolian Democratic Union and contributed to Mongolia’s democratization. In 1990, he founded Mongolia’s first private newspaper and engaged in media activities, taking the lead in passing Mongolia’s press freedom law.

Because of this history, he is sometimes called the “Thomas Jefferson of Mongolia” in the West. During his state visit to Korea in 2016, he was even appointed as an honorary citizen of Seoul City.

Former President Elbegdorj also visited North Korea in 2013, but was unable to hold a summit meeting because Chairman Kim Jong-un did not meet him. He later revealed through the media that during his visit to North Korea, he had requested to visit North Korea’s forced labor camps, underground nuclear facilities, and North Korean homes, but was rejected.

During his visit to North Korea, he gave a speech at Kim Il-sung University and said, “No tyranny and dictatorship can last forever. He also attracted attention by making remarks that openly criticized dictatorship and emphasized democracy, such as “Living freely is a human desire, and this is eternal power.”

At the time, the North Korean regime did not disclose the contents of the speech to the outside world.
