Special counsel Jack Smith recently filed some additional charges against former President Donald Trump, in the case alleging the mishandling of classified documents from his time in the White House, according to CNN reports.

The new charge stems from a top-secret presentation Trump made to attendees at his Bedminster, New Jersey, resort.

Former US President Donald Trump is facing allegations that he and aides asked a staffer to delete surveillance camera footage from his Florida estate in order to obstruct investigations into confidential documents.

The indictments were unsealed Thursday in an updated grand jury record that adds new charges against Trump and adds a third defendant to the case.

A Trump spokesman said the new charges were “nothing more than a continuing desperate and shaky attempt” by the Joe Biden administration “to harass President Trump and those around him” and influence the 2024 presidential race.

“This is election interference at the highest level. They are harassing my company, my family and most of all they are harassing me. The charges are ridiculous. They know that better than anyone,” Trump told Fox News.

The former president assured that “this would not be happening” if the Republican politician “was not ahead of Joe Biden in numerous polls.”

Donald Trump’s trial for mishandling secret documents will begin in May next year, the judge presiding over the case said on Friday. United States District Court Judge Aileen Cannon has ordered the jury trial of the former president, the first to face criminal charges, to begin on May 20, 2024.

Prosecutors had asked for the trial to start in December, while Trump’s defense lawyers had asked for it to take place after the November 2024 presidential election.

Cannon said he was setting the trial to start in May to give both sides time to process the more than 1.1 million pages of documentary evidence in the case.

“Nobody disagrees that the defendants need adequate time to review this and evaluate it on their own,” said Cannon, who was appointed by Trump in 2020, from the White House, to the position of federal judge in the district of south fl.

This process will not prevent you from campaigning, but as a criminal defendant, you will need to be present during the process, which is expected to take weeks, even months.

Last month, the former president pleaded not guilty to dozens of criminal charges for the alleged mishandling of secret documents he took with him when he left the White House in January 2021.

On the other hand, Waltine Nauta, a personal assistant to Donald Trump, pleaded not guilty in a federal court in Miami (Florida) in the case of mismanagement of official documents, for which the former US president was indicted last month.

During a brief hearing, the defendant waived the reading of the six charges against him by the Prosecutor’s Office, including those of conspiracy to obstruct justice, retention of documents and false testimony.

If found guilty of all crimes, he could be punished with up to 90 years in prison.
