After several hours in silence, the former president of the Republic Rafael Correa, top leader of the Citizen Revolution movement (RC) reacted to the runoff on Sunday, October 15, which resulted in the defeat of the candidate Luisa González and the triumph of Daniel Noboa Azín , of the National Democratic Action alliance (ADN), as elected president of Ecuador.

By 11:50 p.m., the results of the National Electoral Council (CNE) placed Daniel Noboa with 51.12% (5’094,301 valid votes) and Luisa González with 47.88% (4’679,196 votes).

Correa used his favorite social network, X (formerly Twitter), to publish his opinion.

“Dear Homeland, Great Homeland: This time we didn’t make it. We face enormous powers. A candidate was even murdered to prevent our victory. Lenín Moreno’s betrayal continues to wreak havoc, but let no one doubt that, in the end, Ecuador will return to the path of Latin American development and integration. “Until victory always!” wrote the former president. He accompanied his message with a photograph and phrase of General Eloy Alfaro, leader of the Liberal Revolution.

The leader of the RC thus referred to the crime of former presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, murder on August 9, in Quito, during the electoral campaign of the first round.

According to what Correa said, the assassination “prevented” the candidate of the Citizen Revolution from winning the Presidency of the Republic.

The former president’s expressions contrast with the conciliatory speech given by Luisa González, in a hotel in Quito, together with the vice presidential candidate, Andrés Arauz and more leaders of the Citizen Revolution.

González acknowledged her loss, congratulated Daniel Noboa, “because it is democracy,” said the candidate. “Enough of hate, enough of polarization,” she said, while saying that she hopes that all the proposals made by the ADN candidate are fulfilled.

“For all those projects that he (Daniel Noboa) offered to the Ecuadorian people and that he has won at the polls, count on the Citizen Revolution and count on our support to build that dignified homeland, that homeland of opportunities,” Luisa González mentioned and made a call to unity. (YO)
