Lee Man-hee, Secretary General of the People Power Party, evaluated former President Syngman Rhee’s selection as ‘Independence Activist of the Month’ in January next year as a “significant and meaningful progress.”

Secretary General Lee said at a floor plan meeting held at the National Assembly this morning, “The selection of independence activist of the month began in 1992, so this is the first selection in 33 years.” He added, “The fact that former President Lee has not been named even once is a historical violation. “It shows that there was a serious lack of understanding and progressive succession,” he argued.

Secretary-General Lee said, “This is not to unilaterally praise former President Lee or deny his mistakes, but at least as an independence activist, we should not ignore his achievements,” adding, “Former President Lee raised the issue of our people’s independence to an international issue and was ahead of his time.” He emphasized, “Through his insight, he revealed the true nature of Japanese militarism.”

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs yesterday selected former President Lee as the independence activist of the month for January next year.
