Enrique Tarrio, former leader of the American extreme right group Proud Boys, was sentenced this Tuesday (09.05.2023) to 22 years in prison, the harshest sentence imposed so far for the attack on the Capitol in USA on January 6, 2021.

“Our unbroken tradition of the peaceful transfer of power was broken on that day,” said U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly.

Prosecutors had sought a 33-year prison term for Tarrio, who was not in the US capital on January 6 but was accused of leading the assault on Congress by members of the Proud Boys.

Others convicted of attacking the Capitol

Tarrio, 39, and several other members of that militia were convicted of seditious conspiracy in May for their role in trying to prevent the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory over Republican Donald Trump.

Another member of the Proud Boys, Ethan Nordean, 32, was sentenced by Judge Kelly last week to 18 years in prison.

Stewart Rhodes, founder of another far-right militia pivotal in the Capitol siege, the Oath Keepers, was also sentenced to 18 years in prison earlier this year.
