U.S. officials and relevant sources including the Russian Defense Ministry pointed out that Sulovkin, the former Russian supreme commander in Ukraine who was detained by the Russian State Security Department, has been released.
The New York Times reported that since Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, launched a mutiny on June 24, the Russian State Security Department immediately detained several high-ranking generals. Former commander-in-chief Sergei Surovikin, who was seen as an associate of Prigozin, was also detained. Now sources say Sulovkin appears to have been released from formal detention, a day after Prigojin died in a plane crash last month, sources close to Russian Defense Ministry officials said.
However, it remains unclear whether Sulovkin was banned or restricted in movement by Russian authorities.
According to U.S. officials, Sulovkin knew of the mutiny in advance. Hours after the incident, Russian authorities immediately released a video in which Sulovkin asked Wagner’s mercenaries to leave the scene with an uncomfortable expression.
